10 Things You Can Do to Reduce Pests in Your Yard

  1. Spring and Fall clean-up are especially important. Do not leave leaf debris around for pests to hibernate and nest in.
  2. Remove all tree stumps and large fallen trees, this is highly conducive to attracting Carpenter Ants and Termites. Even up to 300 feet from the home is a problem.
  3. Keep your lawn mowed and manicured on a regular basis.
  4. Try to eliminate woodsy brush lines, especially if you have pets and small children. These areas are where tick presence is the highest at pose a threat of passing on disease.
  5. Make sure there are no tree branches touching the house and or overhanging the roof. A house needs to breath and be able to dry out to reduce moisture related pests.
  6. Make sure all gutters or attached, level and flowing properly. All roof water needs to be directed downward away from the foundation. Water problems can cause structural problems as well as increase all pest activity. Gutter guards area great benefit.
  7. Make sure all garden irrigation systems direct water outwards away from the house siding and foundation. Water is needed for the plants, but insects thrive in these conditions as well.
  8. Use stone and gravel as much as possible when designing landscape gardens, walls and walkways.
  9. Properly store firewood or any other stored type items. Up off ground, away from the house, covered, and protected.
  10. It is best to maintain some sort of professional pest protection. Exterior treatments are very effective in reducing pest population, eliminating pests from entering the home and making your outside experience much more enjoyable.
